Thanks to NBCOlympics.com the world can get a sneak peek at the very exciting competition that is brewing in womens gymnastics as they are showing full video coverage of women’s podium training. The top teams are all looking good – although a little tight and tired in spots, but it is shaping up to be a very exciting competition all around.

Shawn Johnson looked a little stressed as she warmed up on the floor – as did all the girls. As podium training went on, Shawn and the others seemed to loosen up a bit, cheering each other on as they went through their routines.
Nastia Liukin just looks amazing! She was confident, relaxed and generally looked ready. Part of me is hoping she can win AA. I know that everyone’s eyes are on Shawn Johnson, but Nastia really is one of the best gymnasts ever and has so much artistry in her gymnastics.
Alicia Sacramone just makes me smile! This girl has so much sass and confidence! I am so glad to see her on the team because her vault is higher than anyone’s. Watching it in person at the Olympic Trials was just amazing – that girl flies. She’s my choice for vault champion.
Bridget Sloan is beginning to win me over. I was not impressed with her lack of personality at Trials, but she is a worker! She always seems so focused and pays attention to every detail. Granted her form in areas needs work, but she has improved so much since Trials. I don’t see her winning any medals in Beijing, but she will be a solid team member in prelims.
Samantha Peszek has so much power! I really hope that come meet time that she can hold it all together. Where she is lacking in form and “line” she makes up for in personality and power. She will be a huge help on vault and her standing full on beam is so fast.
Chellsie Memmel (below), who injured her ankle earlier in training, only did bars during podium training. It was fun watching how relaxed she appeared and how she seemed more like an assistant coach at times than some of the actual coaches. Her bars were fabulous and I’d really like to see her make finals.
The Chinese women looked good in places but also had their fair share of mistakes, as did the Romanians. I loved Cheng Fei’s tumbling on beam and her gorgeous choreography on floor. I’ll have to go back and watch more of the China/Romania session and see what else strikes me.
On to the Opening Ceremonies! Let’s get these games going!
