I am going to go against the grain and say that I really would love to see Nastia Liukin win the All Around Gold at these Olympics. Shawn Johnson is the media favorite and she is a phenomenal gymnast, but Nastia Liukin is such a beautiful and artistic athlete - more of a complete package.
Watching the women’s podium training earlier this week, Nastia looked so calm, so confident and truly ready to take on the world. I know she made a mistake on bars in Team Prelims, but she has one of the most difficult sets being performed anywhere in the world. Her floor routine is the epitome of extension, grace and artistry. Her beam routine is chocked full of original and difficult moves. And even her vault is pretty!
On the other hand, Shawn Johnson is just an amazing talent - she is a little firecracker and I am rooting for her too! We saw her compete at the US Classic a few years ago when she first burst on the scene and were completely mesmerized by her personality and power. She makes tumbling on beam look like it was on the floor but she lacks the extension and flexibility of Nastia. Shawn is incredibly consistent and has handled all the media attention with grace and poise like no other.
So, who do you think will win? The oh-so graceful Nastia Liukin or the power packed Shawn Johnson?
