September Golfing

Yesterday I took to the greens again after a few crazy weeks of getting kids back into their school routines and such. The weather was cool and gray and we were convinced it was going to rain any minute. Lucky for us the rain held off and it ended up being a great golf day. We played our favorite local course – primarily because Wednesday’s are Ladies Golf days and it is only $15 for the day (cart included).
There was a huge golf outing going on so we had to play one of the courses twice in order to make our 18. Actually that wasn’t bad because we could use the first 9 as a practice and then come back through and try to improve on our score the second time. The course is called the Island 9 because so many of the greens are on “islands” surrounded by water hazards – like the one in the picture above. I did okay on most of the holes, but for some reason one of the holes – which is only a par 3 – totally eluded me yesterday. I lost 4 golf balls to the pond – two each time I played the hole. Grrr. And last time I played I couldn’t get over the water on the hole in the picture above, but had no problem on yesterday’s problem shot. Oh well.
Overall it was a good day. And of course I learned a few things along the way. My pitching game is getting better. My putting game was horrible yesterday. And my overall score was dramatically better that all my summer outings.
Then there were the things I need in my bag. In the beginning of the summer I had forgotten sunscreen. Ouch. So I put some in my bag as soon as I got home. One mid-summer outing I completely forgot that Virginia mosquitos love me and forgot bug spray. Now I have bug repellent wipes in my bag. And yesterday I learned the hard way that I really have to keep allergy medicine in my bag (the Benadryl allergy strips are perfect because they are so small) if I want to play golf in the fall. The grasses and ragweed were so bad and I ended up sneezing my way through the day.
Now that I am even more prepared for fall golfing I can’t wait to play again soon.
