Lindsey Vonn Wins Two Cup Titles – An American First

Lindsey Vonn became the first American woman to win two World Cup titles in Alpine downhill skiing, clinching the title at the World Cup event in Are, Sweden this week.

According to Universal Sports:

Vonn led Riesch by 369 points at the start of the race in Are meaning the German needed to score at least 69 points more than her to maintain any chance of overtaking the American in the standings in the three remaining races.

But Riesch finished 0.40 seconds behind Vonn and can no longer bridge the gap.

Lindsey is 24 years old, and was first named to the US Olympic Ski Team in 2002 when she was 18. Her second Olympics in 2006 were tough as she suffered a major fall in practice and ended up hospitalized. Even still she came back to race finishing 8th in the downhill, 7th in SuperG, and 14th in slalom.

Based on Lindsey’s current momentum, here’s hoping that the 3rd time is the charm, meaning success in Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games! She is definitely one to watch.
