This video from the Women’s Sports Foundation featuring Natalie Coughlin is from last year, but I am posting it today for my youngest daughter. She is 9 and swimming her first 500 yard freestyle race this afternoon. Natalie Coughlin is her idol and namesake. Eleven time Olympic medalist, Natalie Coughlin talks about everything from injuries and perseverance, choosing college eligibility over going pro, and lessons she has learned from participating in sports in the video and is such a positive role model for  young athletes.

Speaking of postitive role models – 43 year old Dara Torres returns to the pool this weekend in what is being called the “Can’t Miss Race” of the Missouri Grand Prix swim meet this weekend. Torres will swim her signature 50 Free against Amanda Wier, Jessica Hardy, Kara Lynn Joyce and a talented field. You can catch live coverage of the meet through the USA Swimming Web Cast.

Posted by: | Comments (0)

While we are at it, how about something new and pink for your favorite swimmer for Valentine’s Day?  Speedo is offering 15% off and free shipping on orders through February 28, 2011. They have some very cute prints in pinks and red right now – and some even have matching swim caps (like the Fluid Flight pattern). Of all the suits my daughter has, the Speedo suits last the longest and their fit is consistent.

Happy shopping!

It’s Time to Kick off Summer Swim Team

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Summer is right around the corner – literally – with thousands of pools marking the beginning of summer Memorial Day weekend and summer swim teams starting practice. Summer swim team has got to be one of my favorite activities of the year. Some of my best memories as a child are from summer swim team and now with three kids – ages 8, 11 and 13 swimming on a local team, I am forever finding myself recommending summer swim to just about everyone I know.

First off, why would you want your children doing summer swim? Everyone can do it, it’s affordable, it is great cross training for other sports, its social and it is wonderful for self-esteem! Read my article on 5 Benefits of Joining Summer Swim Team for my complete thoughts why summer swim is so good for kids!

Secondly, once you have taken the plunge and signed your kids up for summer swim team, what do you need to remember for all those meets? Holly at the Volunteer Spot starts us off with a list of 5 Swim Mom Musts and then fellow Swim Mom Jill from Musings from Me adds 5 more really great tips including one I learned the hard way our first season – bring at least one extra towel per swimmer.

Finally, have fun with it! Don’t get wrapped up in the ribbons and results! Encourage your swimmers to do their best, set personal goals and most of all, HAVE FUN this summer.

For even more great tips, check out the newly redesigned USA Swimming website and check out my recommendations on the best places to find swim gear at affordable prices.
