Mirai NagasuThe winter olympic games of 2010 in Vancouver, BC will be here before you know it! This weekend’s Skate America competition is just one of the many competitions that ice skaters are using to set their stage for 2010. Skate America kicks off today with competition going on through Sunday.

The ladies field consists of U.S. skaters Mirai Nagasu (reigning U.S. champion and World Junior bronze medalist), Rachael Flatt (reigning World Junior champion) and Kimmie Meissner (2006 World Champion and winner Skate America 2007).

Additionally, it is rumored that Japanese skater, Miki Ando, has been landing “quads” during the practice sessions.  There are an additional 8 skaters in the ladies program which should make for an exciting competition all the way around.

Which Olympic stars will begin to emerge this weekend? Who do you think will be crowned champion at Skate America this year?

Tylenol Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular

Posted by: | Comments (4)

This past week the Tylenol Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular was televised. The event featured nine world class gymnasts, nine world class ice skaters and Chinese pianist, Lang Lang. Here is video of the finale:

The gymnasts featured were: Nastia Liukin, Catalina Ponor, Paul Hamm, Jonathan Horton, Kevin Tan, Raj Bhavsar, Ivan Ivankov, and the acro team of Arthur Davis and Shenea Booth. The ice skaters included: Shizuka Arakawa, Evgeni Plushenko, Xue Shen, Hongbo Zho, Surya Bonaly, Michael Weiss, Yuka Sato, Violetta Afanasieva and Peter Dack.

What do you think of these types of “sport meets show” events? Personally, I think they are a wonderful way to expose larger audiences to the sports while giving the athletes an avenue to continue performing.

US Womens Figure Skating Championships

Posted by: | Comments (0)

US Figure Skating Champion Mirai NagasuFigure skating has a new star!! Fourteen year old Mirai Nagasu captured the crown this past weekend at the US Womens Figure Skating Championships. Rachel Flatt (age 15) took second and Ashley Wagner (age 16) took third. The World Championships are in a few weeks and US Skating officials have a tough decision to make. Mirai and Rachel are too young to compete and some of the “veterans” like Kimmie Meissner are not really having their best seasons.
